중국 산업단지에는 우리가 상상하기도 어려운 희귀질병의 장애인들이 길거리를 활보하거나
쭈그리고 앉아 동냥을 하고 있었다. 24시간을 용광로 앞에 앉아 쉬지 않고 주물을 떠내는 공업단지의
노동자는 살이 흘러내려 손으로 눈을 잡지 않고는 앞을 볼 수가 없다고 했다. 염색공장에서 천을 건져내는
노동자는 약품으로 손가락이 닳아 손가락은 채 한마디도 되지 않는다.
그들은 생을 위해 노동을 하고 있었으며 돈을 내뱉는 누군가를 위한 노예가 되어있었다. 혐오스러웠다. 그들의 중개인 역할 쯤 되는 내 자신이 혐오스러워짐을
느꼈다.
그 뒤로 나는 그렇게 일을 접었다. 그리고
미국의 대도시인 뉴욕으로 갔다. ‘현실 너머 진실’의 머리를 쥐고 흔드는 이들의 일상이 더더욱 궁금해지기
시작해서였다. 그들은 손가락이 없는 노동자를, 얼굴이 흘러내리는
노동자를 떠올리지 않는다. 대도시를 누비며 대도시에 걸 맞는 이야기를 하고 Made in China컵에 커피를 따라 마시며 그날 있었던 일들만을 떠올린다.

The industrial complexes in China have many disabled people with rare diseases beyond our imagination walking about on the streets or crouching to bed for money. A worker at an industrial complex who constantly casts metal in front of a blast furnace 24 hours a day said that his flesh melts down and he cannot see without holding up the eyes with his hands. A worker who takes out fabrics from a dying factory has only one node of his fingers left because of the chemicals.
They were working to make a living and being enslaved by someone who spits money. It was abhorrent. I felt disgusted by myself, working as a middleman.
That is why I quit that job. I moved to New York, a big city in the U.S. I was beginning to wonder about the lives of those who were grabbing and shaking the heads of ‘truth beyond reality’. They do not think of the fingerless workers or the workers whose faces are falling down. They walk around the big city, talk about the topics right for the big city, and think about what happen each day of their lives while sipping coffee in ‘Made in China’ cups.
